Rwanda’s Mountain Gorilla Documentary Premieres Globally on Netflix

A Historic Moment for Rwanda’s Conservation Story

Rwanda has taken its conservation story to the world stage as a powerful new documentary on mountain gorillas officially premieres globally on Netflix.

According to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the feature documentary—“A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough”—was released worldwide on April 17, 2026, showcasing Rwanda’s decades-long success in protecting one of the world’s most endangered species.

The film brings global attention to the remarkable recovery of mountain gorillas in the Virunga region and highlights Rwanda’s leadership in wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism.

Inside the Story of Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas

The documentary follows the life and lineage of a famous gorilla family known as Pablo’s group, offering an intimate look at their behavior, social structure, and survival in the wild.

Narrated by legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough, the film also revisits his historic first encounter with Rwanda’s gorillas nearly 50 years ago, linking past conservation efforts with today’s progress.

Filmed inside Volcanoes National Park, the production captures rare and emotional moments of gorilla life in their natural habitat.

A Global Collaboration for Conservation

The documentary is the result of a major international collaboration involving:

  • Silverback Films
  • Appian Way Productions (founded by Leonardo DiCaprio)
  • Rwanda Development Board (RDB)
  • Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

The production took several years and extensive filming in Rwanda’s volcanic forests, highlighting both wildlife and conservation work on the ground.

Rwanda’s Conservation Success Story

Rwanda’s mountain gorilla conservation is considered one of Africa’s greatest environmental success stories.

Through strict protection, tourism revenue sharing, and community involvement, the mountain gorilla population has steadily increased over the years—making it one of the few great ape species whose numbers are growing rather than declining.

The film emphasizes how conservation, tourism, and local communities work together to protect biodiversity.

Why This Documentary Matters

This Netflix release is more than a film—it is:

  • A global conservation awareness campaign
  • A showcase of Rwanda’s tourism success
  • A tribute to decades of scientific research
  • A story of survival and recovery in the wild
