Description

Overview

Lake Bunyonyi — meaning "Place of Many Little Birds" — sits at nearly 2,000 m above sea level and is one of Africa's highest and deepest lakes. The lake is an important tourist attraction in Uganda, known for its remote location, cool climate, and the absence of crocodiles, hippos, and bilharzia parasites. Its terraced hillsides, 29+ islands, and lush shoreline make it one of the most scenic cycling destinations in East Africa.

Traffic around the lake is light, making cycling safe and enjoyable. The road is unpaved but in decent condition, and cycling is a great way to explore villages and the lakeshore in less time than walking. The weather is pleasant due to the high elevation — the equatorial sun won't beat you down — and the bike ride takes you through scenery, villages, and hamlets for an authentic Ugandan experience.

Terrain & Difficulty

The areas around Lake Bunyonyi have smooth, undulating terrain, but riders should be prepared for some hilly sections. The lake is large and irregularly shaped, with surrounding hillsides that locals beautifully cultivate like parts of Nepal. Some climbs can be steep, so mountain bikes are recommended.

Best time to ride: June and July are the driest months. August, December, January, and February also experience dry conditions, making them ideal for cycling.

Total ride: ~25–35 km | Duration: 4–6 hours | Difficulty: Moderate
