Rwanda's Volcanic Heartland
Musanze is the hub of Rwanda's tourism industry and the food basket of the country — receiving high rainfall and blessed with rich volcanic soils. It sits in the most mountainous district of Rwanda, and together with the neighbouring sector of Kinigi, forms the gateway to one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes.
Kinigi village lies at 2,200 metres on the border of Volcanoes National Park, featuring five villages and 28 sub-villages across 81 square kilometres of breathtaking highland terrain. As you drive through the mountainous corners of the road leading to Kinigi, the temperature drops and a distinctive clear view of the Virunga Mountains unfolds ahead.
The area is rich with experiences beyond the famous gorillas. Must-see attractions include the Musanze Caves, the historic Buhanga Eco-Park — a sacred forest where Rwandan kings performed initiation ceremonies — and the nearby Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. A visit to the Musanze Caves takes you through lava tunnels formed by volcanic activity, surrounded by local communities who showcase traditional crafts, basket weaving, local beer brewing, and honey production. In Kinigi, the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village offers traditional dances, hands-on crafts, and an immersive window into Rwandan cultural heritage.
