Long and shallow, Lake Muhazi twists and turns its way through a flooded valley for more than 40 km, with dozens of traditional villages along the shore and fantastic birding on offer. Sitting at approximately 1,443 m above sea level, it has a temperate tropical highland climate with average daily temperatures of 12°C to 27°C — ideal cycling conditions.
According to oral tradition, the Kingdom of Rwanda was founded in the Lake Muhazi region near Rwamagana around the 14th century, giving this seemingly quiet lake a deep historical significance. Yet it remains one of Rwanda's lesser-visited gems — unhurried, authentic, and strikingly beautiful.
Located in eastern Rwanda, Lake Muhazi offers cyclists a relatively flat ride around the lake. The trail is around 60 km in length, making it well suited to beginners or those looking for a more relaxed cycling journey. This makes it a refreshing contrast to Rwanda's famous thousand hills — a route where riders can enjoy the scenery without battling relentless climbs.
Eastern Rwanda is characterised by plains rather than mountains, showcasing a different side of Rwanda's natural beauty — open skies, gentle valleys, papyrus-fringed shores, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down.
Birdlife: The lake hosts a rich variety of bird species including malachite kingfishers, pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, swamp flycatchers, village weavers, African paradise flycatchers, white-breasted cormorants, yellow-billed storks, cattle egrets, and grey-crowned cranes.
Wildlife: Spotted-necked otters in large numbers are among the major attractions of the lake.
Fish: The lake is home to marbled lungfish and tilapia, and local fishermen can often be seen casting nets from traditional dugout canoes.
Villages & Culture: Cyclists pass through numerous villages along the trail, connecting with locals and experiencing rural Rwandan life at close range.
Gahini: The hilltop town of Gahini sits at the lake's east end and is a great place to soak up small-town Rwandan life — especially on a Sunday, when services at the historic Gahini Anglican Cathedral can be heard from all around
