Lakes Burera and Ruhondo sit at the base of Volcano Muhabura in northern Rwanda, close to the border with Uganda and on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Separated by just a 1 km strip of land, their deep blue waters are framed by steep terraced hills, tall waterfalls, and the silhouettes of the Virunga volcanic range.
The greenery surrounding the lakes gives the water an ethereal hue, making it appear almost green — a landscape unlike anywhere else in Rwanda.
The ride departs from Musanze town, covering 17 km each way through trading centres and villages, with opportunities to interact with local communities along the route. Cyclists are treated to sweeping views of the Virunga volcanoes — Karisimbi, Gahinga, Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Bisoke — throughout the journey. The route also passes the Rugezi swamp, the largest swamp in Rwanda and one of the country's top birding areas, where species like kingfishers, African fish eagles, and the rare Rwenzori Turaco can be spotted.
A perfect half-day or full-day ride for cyclists of all levels — combining volcanic scenery, rich birdlife, and authentic village life in one of Rwanda's most breathtaking corners.
